The profound power of eye gazing

Have you ever truly looked into someone's eyes and felt the whole world around you quietly fade away? We see people every day, yet it’s rare to really look beneath the surface. How often do we truly see someone, or let ourselves be fully seen?

I close my eyes, and immediately images come to mind—bright blue eyes, deep, warm brown eyes, emerald green eyes....Long lashes, short lashes, mascara covered lashes... Fascinating eyes holding entire universes within them, drawing me gently inward like a quiet spiral. Some eyes burn with passion and intensity; others shimmer softly with joy and desire or reveal gentle streams of sadness and longing.  Some eyes seem to carry dreams they hope to pursue, stories they're eager to share, or perhaps secrets they'll never say aloud. And in those quiet, fleeting moments, they tell entire stories without uttering a single word. I often wonder what story my eyes are telling them—stories that even I may not fully know. We are mirrors, reflecting the hidden depths within each other.

These moments feel like vivid photographs, carefully placed in my memory as a personal album of beautiful encounters. I treasure these snapshots deeply. Some of these eyes I might never see again, yet their memory remains precious to me.

There’s something undeniably beautiful and humbling in how human eyes resemble galaxies—they truly feel like gateways to our inner universe, to our soul. Every time I experience such depth, I feel a quiet sense of awe and gratitude, thankful to witness such beauty in another person.

Sometimes, these experiences move me so deeply that tears begin streaming down my cheeks, unbidden and unexplained. Tears of joy? Of sadness? Maybe the pure emotion of feeling fully alive, feeling seen and witnessing another human being? I've learned I don't need answers—just the ability to feel so deeply is a gift in itself.

One of my favourite videos is Marina Abramović’s "A Minute of Silence," a snap of a project where she quietly gazes into the eyes of strangers. Watching their authentic emotions surface—the subtle yet powerful expressions that appear on their faces—is incredibly moving. It's as though their entire being is revealed, in just one brief moment.  And the moment between her and Ulay always takes my breath away.

When was the last time you truly looked into someone's eyes with all your being, saw them clearly, and allowed yourself to be fully seen?

I hope this video touches you as deeply as it touched me.
